Art Mission Statement
The mission of Albuquerque School of Excellence (ASE) ‘is to provide a safe and collaborative environment which will cultivate the academic and social development for all students regardless of their socio-economic status by emphasizing math, science, and technology for the purpose of setting and meeting higher education goals’. Art is a universal form of communication that transcends all barriers of language, gender, race and culture. In order for our students to have a complete education Art must be provided in their school curriculum. My philosophy for a quality visual arts program employs an environment where the individual student can creatively explore, express, discover, and develop their unique relationship with Art. As the Art Teacher I’m the liaison between the student and the adventures that await. Students can expect to have structured lessons and an open studio environment. The Art room is for enriching the students’ educational experience along with providing an expressive outlet. Art education promotes imagination, visual communication, critical thinking skills, tactile/kinesthetic learning, perceptual awareness, and cultivates social, cultural, aesthetic, and cognitive development.
Art Class Description
This class is designed to introduce the student to the various modes of seeing, thinking and making that are the basic tools and foundation of ART. An emphasis will be placed on the individual student’s unique expression of the presented lesson, a sense of creativity, the elements and principals of design, experimentation with materials, discovery/appreciation of Art and the practice of Tactile/Kinesthetic learning. The nature of this class requires attendance and active participation during class time. The student can expect slide talks, demonstrations, creative exercises, art production, art history, art criticism and dialog/discussion.
Each class is important. So it is essential that students keep up, minimize absences and attempt every task. Prominence will be placed on the student’s ability to understand both the visual and verbal vocabulary of ART. Students should then be able to actively participate in class discussions or critiques. These basic skills and abilities will serve as the foundation for students’ future academia. Teacher to student teaching methodology may shift and alter as new techniques are discovered and rediscovered.
Classroom Expectations
Students Should:
Performance Measuring/Grading
Late work may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor with a lower grade. Problems in work may be reworked and turned in for consideration for a higher grade. Grading will be based on several factors. At midterm and finals, students will receive a grade for each project. Furthermore, participation in ASE’s Art Show is a requirement for all students.
The following criteria are considered in the grading of all work and student’s involvement:
1. Demonstration of techniques covered in class
2. Level of involvement in the process, e.g., enthusiasm, motivation, interest, commitment, experimentation
3. Strength of design and concepts (includes presentation, craftsmanship, and creativity
4. Response to and use of critical suggestions in an effective manner
5. Adherence to assigned parameters
6. Participation and preparedness in class and during critiques
7. Attendance
8. Assignments completed by their due dates
Grading Guidelines:
Points Letter Grade
100-90 A -Excellent work in all regards- conception and execution are fully and elegantly integrated. Nothing detracts from the quality or “rightness” of the work.
90-80 B -Very good work- ideas and execution are clear and coherent. Only small superficial details are flawed in some way. Displays very good effort, skill, or craft.
80-70 C -Decent work - significant problems exist, usually a fairly nice idea done poorly (not pushed very far), or a weak idea with some other redeeming qualities. Something to be learned from and improved upon.
70-60 D -Poor- major problems in most areas. Little care, effort or time spent on project.
60-0 F -No work- Also may be used in academic dishonesty cases.
Additional Information
I’m very excited for our adventures in art to begin. Parents and Students please feel free to email, call or stop by for further inquiry or information. Any donation of materials is graciously accepted. This year we have a supply list. This was done in order to spend our budget on more substantial supplies. I understand financial difficulties. This is a suggestion not a requirement. Poster boards will be used to create portfolios in hopes of better home return of assignments. Please remind students the importance of putting their name and grade on their ART! I look forward to another great year!
